Tulcea, October 11, 2017 - Alum S.A. (BBGA, "Company" or "Alum"), the largest producer of calcined alumina in Romania, invests in the development of new products, energy efficiency and the safety and continuity of technological processes, while reducing emissions and specific consumption.

"Since the takeover of Alum, the investment program has focused on streamlining and refurbishing the company, and now we see the concrete results: besides an increase in the quality of the calcined alumina supplied to Alro, the refinery has managed to diversify its production, targeting other industries, and significantly reduced the environmental footprint", said Gheorghe Dobra, General Manager of Alro S.A. "Technological flow has been improved, outdated equipment has been replaced, new technologies have been developed to diversify production. In addition, Alro has made massive investments in Alum for compliance with environmental protection standards".

Alum has invested in increasing profitability by developing new technologies for making new products, such as low-sodium or low-specific calcined alumina. In addition, it has installed new systems for recoverying and reusing the process heat and high energy efficiency frequency converters.

Alum also implemented a complex environmental investment program aimed at safely storing the red mud resulting from the technological process of bauxite processing, reduced carbon dioxide and particule emissions, but also replaced equipment that used heavy fuel oil, and those using natural gas. As such, the natural gas consumption decreased by about 27% from 2010, to 2016. The carbon dioxide emissions reduced by 56.86%, over the last 10 years. In addition, Alum has reduced the consumption of water used for cooling in the technological process, and as a result, the industrial water captured from Danube reduced by 71% in 2016, compared to 2010.

The alumina producer analyzes solutions for the use of red mud in the metallurgical or construction industry or as an adjuvant for soil acidification. Currently, the Company, in a consortium organized by European Aluminum, has applied for funds for a research study under Horizon 2020. This study will run over a five-year period and aims to develop technologies for the use of red mud in other industries, with positive results on environmental protection.
